Bubwith Tennis Club

Set in a small village close to the border between East and North Yorkshire, this friendly club extends a warm welcome to anyone wanting to play tennis – no matter their standard of play. With three artificial grass courts – one of which is floodlit – tennis can be played in Bubwith all year round.

2019’s Yorkshire Tennis Club of the Year, Pocklington Tennis Club boasts six all-weather courts, 4 of which have floodlights. Having recently celebrated its centenary, Pocklington has established itself as one of the area’s premier clubs.

The club finds itself between two distinct areas, meaning that it plays league tennis is a wide range of places. Its teams feature in various double leagues in York and Driffield – meaning that they could play anywhere from Harrogate to Bridlington.

Pocklington’s coaching setup is well recognised too, with head coach Sean Evans awarded Development Coach of the Year 2021 by Yorkshire Tennis.

Entry to the club is through a coded gate entry system, with court booking (including floodlight use) made through the ClubSpark system.

“York’s best known village club”, as it claims to be, is located just outside of the city’s ring road, to the west of the city centre.

With a total of six floodlit courts (three hard, three artificial grass), the club also includes a conservatory clubhouse. Next door, in the Poppleton Centre, members can also access a bar-café, toilets, changing rooms and showers.

As well as a large number of men’s, ladies and mixed teams competing in local York tennis leagues, Poppleton also have a men’s team in AEGON Men’s Team Tennis Yorkshire, for both doubles and singles.

With a team of coaches, Poppleton offers excellent coaching from beginners to improvers and beyond.

The centre of York is a 5-mile journey away.

York’s Rowntree Park Tennis Club is set in the most picturesque of surroundings. A stone’s throw away from the River Ouse, the tennis club is a small part of a 30-acre park, which also includes ponds (complete with ducks and geese), extensive children’s play areas, and skate park – all just a short stroll from the city centre.

The club itself offers six courts – three of which can be used by non-members. As well as being represented in the York Men’s and Mixed leagues, along with the Fulford Ladies Invitation Tennis League, the club organises its own internal ladder and box leagues for some added friendly competition.

For those looking to improve further, coaching sessions are also available for adults and younger players. The club has teams in the York Men’s Tennis League.

Sutton Upon Derwent Tennis Club is unique on this list as, along with two all-weather courts, it also boasts two well-kept grass courts, given local tennis players a different experience compared to other clubs in the area.

The club is extremely active in local tennis leagues, with the mixed teams particularly popular. Sutton Upon Derwent also runs a number of its own tournaments, including singles and family competitions.

The usual group coaching options are also available, as is 1-2-1 coaching for more specific coaching requirements. Tennis camps are also offered during school holidays.
