Chairman’s Review Of 2021

Chairman Andy Corfield reflects on 2021; a great year at Bubwith Tennis Club.

A successful 2021 for Bubwith Tennis club, with new teams, record member numbers and improved communications.

The courts continue to be some of the best in the area, with a rejuvenation planned for March to make sure this continues. Thanks to Diana and Richard Longthorp for their hard work overseeing court maintenance.

The club is only successful due to the committee’s hard work, so thanks for their efforts through the year to ensure the club goes from strength to strength, as we continue to meet the aims of our Mission Statement.

Match Play

A fantastic season for the club with the return of competitive league tennis, with a couple of bits of silver expected in the clubhouse in the near future!

The Men’s 2 were successful and finished champions of Division 8, with Luke Edwards taking the coveted statistic of league top scorer.

The maiden season for the Mixed 3 was also extremely successful with the squad champions of Div10 and achieving a raft of accolades. Carl Mutarelli-Atkinson topped the Men’s stats, Rachel Wottge topped the Ladies stats, and Carl Mutarelli-Atkinson and Anne Stephenson topping the couple’s stats!

The Ladies had a fantastic season and narrowly missed out more silverware for the clubhouse too! Solid mid table positions were achieved for the Men’s 1, Mixed 1 and Mixed 2, building strong foundations to push on next season.

Thanks to all the team captains for their managing the squads this season.

A special mention to Luke Edwards who has expertly managed the mixed squads this season to allow more people to get involved and experience competitive tennis at all levels.

Financials

The club continues to provide fantastic facilities to its members. The installation of new LED floodlighting and payment meter has been completed, massively improving the playing conditions through the winter months, following on from the hard work in 2020 from Lizanne and Diana on securing a grant from the Spaldington Windfarm.

This March also sees the courts rejuvenated, with this expense ensuring the club provides a first-class surface for the upcoming season.

The club remains in a strong financial position with the amazingly successful 24-hour Tennis Marathon raising significant funds to ensure longer term goals can be achieved. This year we also used the event to raise funds for the Yorkshire Air Ambulance, a charity that saves lives across the region and relies on the generosity of community funding to keep the helicopters flying. Fantastic work by Lizanne and our Social Committee made this event happen, with players of all ages having lots of fun taking part.

The community feeling also continued later on in the summer with the club’s involvement of the Bubwith Bash – a wonderful event organised by the Parish Council and Bubwith Leisure and Sports Centre. We enjoyed playing our small part.

Social Tennis and Coaching

Matt and his team from I Can Play Tennis were back in Bubwith with tennis coaching back up and running. Coaching has certainly been one of the successes of the year with many newcomers making their tentative first steps in the sport, and then developing at an incredible rate.

Later in the year we saw our juniors enjoy a summer camp, with a number of sessions sold out and interest out-doing demand. Look out for another summer camp next year! I Can Play Tennis have also generously provided junior tennis balls to help our younger members enjoy the game with parents.

Mixed Club Nights on a Wednesday, Ladies Tennis on a Friday, and Men’s Tennis on a Sunday continue to prove extremely popular with members, and hopefully this continues through 2022.

The September Club Tournament was great fun for all involved with Andy Corfield and Heather Headley emerging winners after a close fought final. Beau Corfield was also presented with the Matt Ward Bubwith Tennis Club Junior Cup to keep the Bubwith silverware in the Corfield household.

Thanks to Shaun for making these handicap tournaments happen through the season, with this years’ Christmas addition also proving to be a huge success!

Sponsors

The committee are deeply appreciative of our club sponsors who have stuck by the club despite the tough times we are all going through.

Special thanks to Claire and her team at The White Swan for also hosting the social meals/events held over 2021, the food and service was amazing, and the committee look forward to more social events through 2022.

Other Matters

Massive thanks to James for significantly improving and updating the club’s communications over the course of the year.

It’s time for me to pass on the baton as Club chair, but I would like to give my thanks to all the committee members I have worked with through the years for their hard work and dedication! It’s a fantastic club and maybe I’ll be voted in to return to Chair one day 😊

All the best for 2022,

Andy
